Adult Center receives $186,800 Nursing Grant

Tri-Rivers School of Practical Nursing recently received an $186,800 grant from the Ohio Board Nursing’s Nurse Education Grant Program. The funds will be used to offer an additional evening program, according to Emeline Kelly, nursing education programs manager for the school.
“Tri-Rivers will use the money to help launch an evening program that can be completed in 15 months,” explained Kelly. “It will be a more intensive program than our current 20-month evening part-time program and will offer another alternative to our school’s regular 10-month full-time day program.”

The program will start this October, said Richard George, adult director. Both Kelly and George said there is a strong demand for a second evening course based on the number of inquiries the school regularly receives. “We are currently signing up potential students. It is evident there is a need and healthcare is still an industry where jobs are available.”

Employment is expected to grow as more nurses are needed to respond to the long-term care needs of an aging population and the general growth of health care, which continues to expand beyond the traditional hospital setting.

George reported that the grant covers start-up personnel and skills lab equipment costs and said the equipment purchased with this grant will also benefit students in the school’s other Practical Nursing programs.

The Ohio Board of Nursing has been awarding these grants since 2004 to nurse education programs that have partnerships with health care facilities, community health agencies and other education programs in order to establish or support partnerships that work to increase enrollment capacity. Kelly said that “Tri-Rivers School of Practical Nursing is fortunate to be located in the Marion area where we receive support from many area health care facilities including Marion Manor who will be the primary clinical site for this evening practical nursing class.” She noted that she is proud that many of our graduates find employment within our local area and continue to serve our community as they advance their health care careers.
